With the huge success of Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings both as a film and exhibiting representation, it's safe to say it's become a global phenomenon. It made Simu Liu one of the next leading man in this phase of Marvel superheroes. At the helm of it all was Japanese-Irish filmmaker, Destin Daniel Cretton. Now, he landed an exclusive multi-year deal with Marvel Studios and Hulu's Onyx Collective. Not only that, an equally huge announcement is Cretton is coming back to write and direct the "Shang-Chi" sequel.
We can expect Cretton's work to begin popping up through the streaming services in the next few years. A project already slated and in development is a new MCU series for Disney+. According to the press release from Disney Onyx Collective is "a new content brand on Hulu designed to curate a slate of premium entertainment by creators of color and underrepresented voices."
Deadline also shared, Cretton will be developing TV projects through his new production company, Family Owned alongside partner Asher Goldstein. The production company aims to highlight experiences and communities that are overlooked by media. He joins a roster of admired creators like Natasha Rothwell (SNL), Prentice Penny (Insecure) and all non-Marvel titles produced by Ryan Coogler’s Proximity (Black Panther).
Destin Daniel Cretton's filmography includes I Am Not a Hipster and Short Term 12 which both debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Short Term 12 even won the Grand Jury Prize Award at Sundance and the Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival in 2013. He also worked with Michel B. Jordan in Just Mercy where Jamie Foxx received a supporting role nomination. With almost 10 years in the industry, Cretton continues to make projects that make underrepresented voices heard.

Producer Kevin Feige, stars Simu Liu and Awkwafina, and director Destin Daniel Cretton explore Shang-Chi’s backstory and his connection to the Ten Rings in “Destiny” - a new, exciting, action-packed featurette for Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings.”
Shang-Chi’s journey is told with stunning visuals, the MCU’s signature spectacle and displays of mind-blowing action, along with the talents of a diverse, stellar cast and a relatable story. Behind part of the visual development for the film is Marvel’s Senior Visual Development Artist and the “Visual Father of Baby Groot” Anthony Francisco.
