With the aim to present audiences with more diverse storytelling in film, TV, and media, a new drama series looks to tell a story within the Historic Filipinotown (HiFi) in Los Angeles. Concepción is currently in the works and it is created by Craig Obligación Wilson in collaboration with Reggie Lee (All Rise), Jeremiah Abraham (Yellow Rose), and ABS-CBN. The series follows an Asian-American kingpin and his family who hold power in LA's HiFi area.
Kingpin, Paulo "Pepe" Concepción aka "Lolo Pepe" has a criminal empire through various crime related businesses. Name one type of crime and he's got a business related to it. His story along with the family's is set between the eras of 1992 and 2020 and spans across 28 years. Lolo Pepe looks to expand his family's power over HiFi and continue his reign in the area.
According to Deadline, "Concepción seeks to examine the world of an Asian-American crime patriarch, a world of drugs and money, but also heritage and pride, viewed through origins, history, choices and consequences." The collaboration with ABS-CBN brings value to the project as they'll help contribute to adding authenticity to the storytelling. As we look to bring Filipino stories to life and expand to a global audience, the project is a first of its kind.
