The MET Gala always brings out star-studded influencers together for a night filled with the most talked about fashion choices. Everyone from A-list celebs to your favorite Filipinx superstars all showed up in their best fits including Saweetie in a Christian Cowan dress with 10 million crystals! Also taking the spotlight were Hailee Steinfeld, Evan Mock, Olivia Rodrigo, Leylah Fernandez, and Leyna Bloom. All we can say is they definitely understood the assignment!
The theme this year, “American Independence” helped celebrate the museum’s two-part exhibit kicking off with “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and concludes with “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” in 2022. According to Vogue and exhibit organizers, part one will “celebrate The Costume Institute’s 75th anniversary and explore a modern vocabulary of American fashion.” Check out our favorite looks from the Filipino A-listers below!
Saweetie made her MET debut and wore a custom gown by designer, Christian Cowan that was embedded with 10 million crystals which all came together basically in 24-hours. The dress’ cape represented the colors from the Filipino and Black American Heritage flags and which makes her an American girl. During the carpet, she shared the meaning behind it: “my cape represents the Black American heritage flag and the Filipino flag.”
See Christian Cowan, the designer himself talk about designing the dress, celebrating Saweetie, and how his hands are still stained from placing the crystals by hand.
Hailee Steinfeld shocked everyone as she almost went unrecognizable for her MET look. The usually brown haired singer and actress tried out a new blonde shorter look. She debuted the Magnetosphere Dress which was designed by Iris Van Herpen and Rogan Brown. According to Vanity Fair the dress takes after “a myriad of relief sculptures, made of hand and laser-cut layers of Parley Ocean Plastic, individually stitched to encircle the bodice, forming one extremely delicate circle of life.” Hailee’s transformation for this year’s Gala definitely hits the mark.
Evan Mock, also a first time Gala attendee showed up incognito with a full leather face mask. The HBO Max Gossip Girl actor who is very familiar with the famous MET steps (*pass the yogurt, please) wore Thom Browne paired with an infamous mask to boot. This event is definitely the time to take some of your best fashion risks. See how Evan got ready for the Gala in this reel!
Olivia Rodrigo who’s having the year of her life, made her MET Gala debut. She wore an all black Saint Laurent bodysuit and stayed true to her Gen Z, punk rock style. In an interview, she shared, “I personally love American punk music, and I think Saint Laurent does a really good job of making punk rock feminine. So that’s what I was going for tonight.” All we can say is “good 4 u,” Olivia!
Leylah Fernandez who stole the hearts of many during the U.S. Open also served a look at the MET Gala. The tournament runner-up said her dress was inspired by tennis royalty, Venus and Serena Williams. Part of Gen Z that’s taking over, Leylah wore a black-and-white Carolina Herrera that paid tribute to the Williams’ 1998 shoot with Vogue. She may have missed prom, but we think the MET Gala is a pretty good replacement.
Leyna Bloom stunned in wearing Atelier Prabal Gurung and Swarovski jewelry. She is winning in this gown and did anyone else catcher her R2D2 embedded accessory?
