Filipino representation was at an all-time high at this year’s 2022 GRAMMYs. The year’s biggest night in music featured Filipinos nominatinated in all major categories and featured three official winners. H.E.R. won for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Fight For You.”
Bruno Mars of Silk Sonic swept with Record of the Year, Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Song, and Song of the Year.
Hawaiian-Filipino musician, Kalani Pe'awon his third Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album for his album, Kau Ka Peʻa and gave a touching acceptance speech paying tribute to his Hawaiian roots.
To round things off Olivia Rodrigo took home three GRAMMYS for Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, & Best Pop Solo Performance. In addition to Olivia Rodrigo, H.E.R., and Bruno Mars dominating their categories, GRAMMY nominee Saweetie dominated the red carpet. The Filipino-American femcee served two looks during the event.
While Olivia Rodrigo may have taken home three GRAMMYs and shut down the award show with her performance, she had two viral moments from the night that set social media ablaze. First, her moment with BTS member V as part of the supergroup's intro to their standing ovation performance. Additionally, the teen pop sensation drew inspiration from Adele and Taylor Swift by dropping and breaking one of her Grammys on the red carpet.
The trio of Filipino talents also performed at the award ceremony. Bruno Mars opened the show with Anderson .Paak as Silk Sonic, lighting up the stage and setting the energy for the night.
Olivia took to the stage and brought in all the emotions to perform her hit "Drivers License."
Lastly, H.E.R. gave us an electrifying and epic performance taking the stage alongside the legendary Lenny Kravitz and Travis Barker.
Also in attendance, straight off their Pre-Awards, MYX Tape performance at the 24 Oxford at the Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas, the Friday before the ceremony, were Ruby Ibarra and Kiana V.
The duo shared details of their outfits for the evening, which included custom outfits made by all Filipino designers:
Visual Artist, Keavan Yazdani also represented at the ceremony and was nominated for two awards for his work on Justin Bieber's mega-hit "Peaches."
Elle King also showed out and matched the red carpet in her monochromatic look. She was nominated alongside Miranda Lambert for “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” in the Best Country Duo/Group Performancecategory.
We’re proud of all of the Filipino representation at the GRAMMYs this year and what this means for the past Filipino acts who paved the way, the current Filipino acts in entertainment, and most importantly the future Filipino artists who will be inspired by this night at home. H.E.R. snags two more Grammys at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards last night in Los Angeles. She won for Song of The Year with I Can't Breathe and Best R&B Song with Better Than Imagined! She posts a then and now photo from the 2019 and 2020 Grammys where she also won 2 Grammys Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance.
She celebrates her Grammy wins by showing off her #pinoypride. H.E.R. gives all her fellow Filipinos a shout out as she tells us what her Tita would think about her win. "Oh my God, I'm so proud of you, you have Grammys. Wow!...Even if you do not win, you are a winner." We may not all relate to winning a Grammy, but we can relate to having a supportive Tita!
I Can't Believe was written by H.E.R., D'Mile and Tiara Thomas and produced by D'Mile. Better Than Imagined was produced by Robert Glasper and features H.E.R. and Meshell Ndegéocello who performs the spoken word in the track.
Now the night after winning at the Grammys, H.E.R. and her collaborators Tiara Thomas and D'Mile are Oscar-nominated songwriters. They're nominated for best original song with Fight for You from the film, Judas and the Black Messiah. She was grateful for the nomination. According to ABC News, H.E.R. says, “I’m feeling crazy man..."
“This just doesn’t happen. It’s just a whole different world I’m stepping into. It’s just a crazy, crazy part of my journey. I never would have imagined this would even happen. I’m super, super grateful. That’s the foundation of how I feel. It’s just gratitude.”
Larry Ramos became the first Asian / Filipino American to win a Grammy Award in 1962. Hilario D. "Larry" Ramos Jr., of Filipino descent, was born and raised in Hawaii. In 1962, Larry Ramos joined The New Christy Minstrels, an American large-ensemble folk music group. Ramos provided backup vocals and played the banjo as well as other stringed instruments. The New Christy Minstrels recorded their debut album 'Presenting The New Christy Minstrels' on Columbia records. The album would win a Grammy Award in 1962 for Best Performance by a Chorus. Larry Ramos would later lead the pop band The Association.
