Looks like Adrian Marcel and Sonny B have been cookin' up bangers in the studio. The Bay Area natives, Sonny B, who's part of the group CRSB and R&B artist Adrian Marcel posted earlier this year that they've been collaborating, writing, and producing together. They kicked off their collab with an R&B track, "I Gotchu (End of the Day)," which was written and produced by Sonny B and performed by Adrian Marcel.
The latest Adrian Marcel track comes after a brief hiatus and he sure returned with a certified hit. The raw and emotional song talks about an unconditional love and how relationships might not always be in the honeymoon phase, but you still choose that person. It's ride or die type of love and the track gets you all up in your feels. It's been a while since we've heard a true R&B record.
In a recent interview with Sheen Magazine, Marcel gives details behind its meaning. "In a woman’s perspective, it’s a song where a woman can feel hurt. For a man, they can feel understood...it’s one of those things where it’s the type of love where they may get on your nerves, but regardless I still chose you, I still got you when I’m mad at you. I think that in R&B, I haven’t heard too much of that, where there’s still an edge in the lyrics."
The official music video premiered on BET and BET Soul and it brings out those classic R&B vibes, think Omarion, Frank Ocean, and Ne-Yo. It gets real without the need to be flashy, which is who Adrian Marcel is at the core.
So what's next? He's dropping new music this year and his EP titled Marcel. The next single will be In My Bag that gives a different spin to "I Gotchu." The EP will have 5 tracks with a release set for the end of the year. He'll not only be releasing new music at the end of the year, but he also short filmed lined up to release.
The EP project is about self-growth and evolution, but still keeping it real to who he is as an artist. He shared how excited he is to release new music, "My team is amazing! We’re constantly making music that I feel like is timeless. Since March, we’ve written and recorded over 30 records. I’m excited for all of those to continue to have their moments to drop."
East Oakland’s own Adrian Marcel is solidifying himself as an R&B chameleon whose smooth and sultry sonics pair seamlessly with his boldness and emotional bravery. With an across-the-board artistic upbringing and versatile Bay Area cultivation, Marcel’s organically resonant work provides palatability and relatability, allowing fans to feel seen and heard regardless of where they’re from or who they are. His work largely pertains to the importance and power of passionate love, a topical testament to his generation-spanning influences such as Al Green, Donny Hathaway, Ginuwine and Maxwell. A graduate of the prestigious Oakland School For the Arts, Marcel’s attraction to music became paramount to his being early on, even with experiencing a few minor detours along the way.
He snagged his first platinum-selling single, “2 AM,” a trap-influenced rhythmic banger with accompaniment by rapper Sage The Gemini, and found himself on Billboard’s Rhythmic Songs chart for 10 weeks in 2015. Marcel’s forthcoming eponymous EP Marcel is expected in fall 2021. The project shows a new side to the artist, whose personal and professional self-awareness further expanded as a result of the pandemic. Where Adrian is laid-back and humble, his alter-ego Marcel is confident, free, and raw—aspects of his personality he’s “tried to hide” in the past.
