In a time when misinformation is so easily spread, those who uphold their duties to share the truth is life-saving. And this is exactly what Nurses’ Corner is doing in kumu, as it nurtures more health-centric streams in the Kumunity. It not only offers a safe space for health workers and frontliners to come together, it has also become a channel for information and education concerning health, safety, and medical updates.

Nurses’ Corner - the brainchild of 31-year-old nurse, June Legaspi - was established in early 2020, at the height of the global pandemic. Legaspi is a Filipino nurse based in Munich, Germany, and works in the intensive care unit for cancer patients. As an aspiring content creator, he loved to share his travel adventures and fitness journey. But, due to the current constraints of the pandemic, he’s had to switch gears, now focusing on creating educational streams on kumu under his username @june_legaspi.

“Due to the pandemic, all my travels have been halted,” Legaspi begins. “So I ended up staying at home, which I usually don’t do. This gave me more time to explore streaming, which I haven’t been able to do. Eventually, I discovered kumu through a friend’s referral, and I ended up liking it because I get to connect with people globally.”

Though confined to his home and office, Legaspi found a sense of freedom and “Kumunity”, connecting online with other healthcare workers. “Frontliners – especially doctors and nurses – hold a vital role in society and in the battle against COVID. We were physically and emotionally tired from the demand of the workload, and were even discriminated against because of our work. So, I had the idea to create content that would serve as ‘social therapy’ for my fellow frontliners,” he explains.

Soon, he joined forces with fellow streamers Lovelyn Paddock (@lovelyn70), Sheena Ann Dolojol-Dizon (@Shineybabe), and Maichael Jemille J. Quiao (@jemz101) and together, launched “Nurses’ Corner.” They created it as an “educational tambayan” for frontliners and a safe space where people could ask questions about health, wellness, and the novel coronavirus.

Each of the hosts contributed greatly to the team dynamics. Legaspi had a background in medical and intensive nursing, Paddock and Quiao had expertise in mental health and nursing education, while Dolojol-Dizon had experience in geriatric and pediatric nursing. Despite being in different parts of the world, the group immediately synced; they found great fulfillment in putting together their weekly stream.

Lovelyn Paddock was the first to be recruited to the group. The 50-year-old nurse, residing in Illinois, USA, has 26 years of nursing experience as a Board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health nurse.

She and Legaspi hit it off well after she watched the latter’s livestream on kumu. There was instant chemistry, as they both were lifestyle content creators. “What I love about kumu is that it gave me an outlet where I can simply unwind and de-stress. It allows me to make new friends from across the globe and from different walks of life. In addition, the Nurses’ Corner has given us the platform to bring awareness to the public and to share our knowledge relevant to healthcare,” Paddock says. kumu’s capacity for community-building proved effective. Soon, the duo found their other hosts and partners for their livestream.

Dolojol-Dizon is a 34-year-old nurse based in Singapore; she had no hesitation in joining the team, as she found common ground in the cause. “I discovered that kumu is not only a place where you are entertained, but it’s an avenue to host healthy discussions. You can educate others, grow your own knowledge, and exchange ideas and opinions,” she says, adding that by becoming a livestreamer, she’s also been able to hone her skills in hosting and public speaking.

“Moreover, kumu has allowed me to reconnect with friends and family (which is important during this pandemic). Surprisingly, I found some of my friends here in kumu, whom I had lost contact with for more than three years already,” Dolojol-Dizon says. “And thanks to kumu, I was also able to host my virtual bridal shower on the channel, which I shared with my real-life friends. And coming soon, our wedding!” she laughs.

The last host - Maichael Jemille Quiao-  is another nurse based in New Jersey, USA. The 31-year-old works in Nursing Practice and Education as a Professional Practice and Development Specialist. He’s also taking her master’s degree in nursing, so he’s found a great outlet in Nurses’ Corner.

As they’re building their following, the group is amazed by the Kumunity’s response to their little initiative. “We’re very appreciative of our viewers, and the recognition we’ve gained through education and free health advice. Each episode of our streams is very rewarding. We get to help the Kumunity with their health issues and make them feel at ease, especially when it comes to COVID-19 awareness and education,” Quiao says.

While Nurses’ Corner is still a young stream, the team is excited for all the opportunities this year – not just for their little initiative, but for other kumu livestreamers. Paddock shares her words of encouragement to fellow content creators: “To those who are interested in live streaming, find the types of content that speak to you, and the ones that you can commit to. It really just depends on what your goals and motivations are. In kumu, you define your own success!

Quiao adds, “Be an instrument in helping the Kumunity and putting a smile on other people's faces. Whether you want to host a livestream about lifestyle, health, or entertainment, remember that you are making a difference, and that difference can go a long way in other peoples' lives.”

Amidst the excitement for holiday shopping, kumu officially launched a new marketplace tier in their “Live E-Commerce” branch. Shopkumu, the upscale shopping platform within the app, is officially open for business, signaling an exciting disruption for how we perceive premium shopping. The release of this chic shopping platform follows hot on the heels of kumu’s in-app revamp, which included an expanded “Shop” feature.

According to representatives within kumu’s “Live E-Commerce” branch, the addition of Shopkumu has allowed the company to cater to more collaborating brands, and therefore a wider consumer-base in the Philippines. While Karlito’s Korner has been affectionately described as the online bazaar of kumu, Shopkumu aims to be the upscale online shopping destination for the country’s stylish lot.

“Think livestream shopping parties, product drops and launches, hearing about your favorite celebrity’s shopping hauls. And then, being able to purchase these items in real-time, while engaging with your co-shoppers and livestreamers,” elaborates Samantha Rodriguez-Tung, Sr. Vice President of kumu’s Live E-Commerce. Much of the livestream selling strategies were born from the pandemic, as lockdowns have restricted face-to-face shopping experiences. In which case, livestream markets like kumu’s “Shop” are the next best alternative.

While there are many surprises still brewing in the background, Shopkumu has confirmed that their livestream hosts include famous influencers and celebrities like Dani Barretto, Bella Padilla, Kris Bernal, and Ces Drillon, who are lifestyle authorities in their own right. Trends championed under Shopkumu include fashion finds, decadent skincare, fine cuisine, artisanal goods, and so much more.

Within this year alone, kumu’s “Live E-Commerce” has gradually built itself to be a unique shopping power-house for Filipinos. Combining the facets of online shopping and livestream entertainment, popularly coined as “shoptertainment”, kumu’s online marketplaces are truly a unique hub, where shoppers and live sellers can interact in an almost-personal manner.

Shopkumu is officially live on the kumu app. To keep up with all the latest updates and finds, follow the handle @shopkumuph on Instagram, and Facebook.

A new update of the Pinoy live streaming app, kumu, has officially been launched, and is now available for download. The new look and features of the app is part of kumu’s impressive overhaul of growth in 2020, which included the release of kumu klips videos, and a partnership with Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) in the months prior. Rest assured, kumu has more surprises in store in the coming months, as the latest app version sets the foundation for steady expansion.

Andrew Pineda, Chief Architect of the kumu app, remarks that upgrades were primarily implemented with specific growth strategies. “We wanted to focus on growing our e-commerce platform and our Kumunities”, he says. “We wanted to make sure they had prominent places in our app. So, we were inspired by other apps in the market that had a lot of features. But, we were able to innovate them to help users navigate the app more seamlessly and intuitively.”

Key updates in kumu’s new version include:  New “Home” Page kumu’s new in-app home page has a new structure, with main tabs “Follow”, “LIVE” and “Discover.” Under the new home structure, users can now navigate through their desired content easier.

Enhanced Shopping Experience

Following the popularity of live commerce in the app, kumu has revamped the “Shop” platform to include market categories “ Fashion”, “Health & Beauty”, “Electronics”, “Food” and so much more. Additionally, product listings and links can now be added to kumu’s short-form video format, kumu klips. This allows users to purchase within the short video itself.

Co-host with 2-seat option

Live streaming with multiple hosts has proven to be very popular with Filipinos. To further enrich this experience, kumu has added a 2-seat co-host option, allowing equal screen space for two streamers in one live session. This format best suits streamers who are interested in video podcasts and talk shows with a guest.

In the coming months, users can expect more exciting changes, new online communities and diversified platforms at kumu, as expansion continues at kumu. It’s all part of the company’s commitment to keep up with the digital innovations of the time, while tailoring it specifically to the needs of Filipinos across the globe.

Helping to redefine OPM (original Pilipino music) and catapult amazing Filipino talent to the bigger global stage is kumu and myx, both partnered up to create an exciting new channel on the live-streaming app called @myxglobal.

For the longest time, global audiences – including Pinoys – have equated Pinoys to be talented at just cover songs. But in reality, there has always been a greater, more diverse talent pool of Pinoy artists that sing, write & produce original music of all genres that need international exposure.

Roslynn Alba Cobarrubias, ABS-CBN Global Head of Music & the myx Global Platform, has worked with music industry heavyweights both here and abroad; she aims to change the game for Pinoy artists, opening up another playing field through @myxglobal.

Cobarrubias shares, “There is a misconception of what music from the Philippines or music made by Filipinos sounded like, especially to FilAms, until recently, there were few household names that people could mention by name. But now, there are artists all over the world using their experiences, culture, inspiration, and talent to create a ‘uniquely Filipino’ sound. It’s a fusion of cultural experiences mixed with various influences, sounds, and styles.” As Randy Jackson of American Idol shared, ‘Filipinos are some of the most talented in the world,” whether they are from a singing competition, like Cedrice from The Voice US, or the Manila underground scenes like Syd Hartha. In fact, Cobarrubias says, with Filipino music gaining ground internationally, “The music industry is now slowly equating Filipino to [the term] ‘dope,’ or ‘extremely talented,’ especially to the meteoric rise of GRAMMY award-winning artists like Bruno Mars, H.E.R. & Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas alongside multi-platinum producers like Illmind & DJ Flict. Stemming from an upbringing surrounded by music, Filipinos are increasingly getting to be known internationally for being amazing singers, recording academy recognized producers & chart-topping songwriters.

Cobarrubias has a deep and passionate connection to Filipinos in music; she’s worked in the mainstream music industry for over 20 years, producing concerts and editorial programs with artists like Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Drake, Eminem, and Jay-Z, among others. “Previously, it was very difficult to find media that would feature our community. There were a lot of misinterpretations of what Filipino artists or talent was, thinking the music would be too niche, or only in Tagalog, and not built for mainstream platforms that was often referenced by music industry executives as “tough to market.”

Before joining the myx team, she admits that she could only name a handful of Filipino artists that she had featured or worked with, like Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas, Bruno Mars, and Illmind. Indeed, there are thousands of incredible Filipino talent that remains undiscovered, which is why she’s committed to helping artists get into the global spotlight and get the support they need to share their music.

Speaking on behalf of this underappreciated lot, she adds, “As a community, we are a mixed, fusion culture, at the intersection of different influences from where we were born or where we grew up, we are a melting pot of various cultures from Asian to Latino & Black, people are seeing that a lot in music.” She mentions the unique perspectives of Black/Filipino artists and singers like H.E:R., Saweetie, Guapdad 4000, and J Rey Soul, who have a unique mix of Filipino, American & African American culture. “Just like any artist that draws up inspiration from their surroundings, that is what you see with the rise of originality and music from the likes of James Reid in the Philippines to Ruby Ibarra in the Bay Area, to Kolohe Kai in Hawaii. All have very unique sounds, but they are all uniquely Filipino in their own way, and proud of it.”

“In the past, you’ve had artists that felt the need to hide their ethnicity or origin in fear of being type-casted or deemed ‘unmarketable’ by their record labels,” Cobarrubias explains. “But this is changing for the artists as they grow more vocal [in their music] sharing their unique experiences. Guapdad 4000 has talked about his Lola’s superstitions in the Philippines, Saweetie shared the commonality between Filipino & African Americans & being called “Ma’arte” at a young age, while pop star J Rey Soul talked about her love for Filipino food & experiences traveling the world & topping the Billboard Latin Charts with the Black Eyed Peas, in recent @myxglobal myxCLUSIVE LIVE interview shows on kumu.

Starting November 3, viewers and fans can enjoy new exclusive myx content that reflects the “beat of our culture, showcasing our stories, our music, uniquely Filipino.” On kumu, you can expect more interviews, live performances, game shows, music talent shows, NFC campaigns and, of course, more music from the biggest Filipino talents in the world like Saweetie, P-Lo, beabadobee, Inigo Pascual, KZ Tandingan, Kiana V, Manila Grey, Ylona Garcia, Massiah, Gabe Bondoc, KingwAw and Nadine, as well as renowned Filipino DJs like DJ Q-Bert, DJ Franzen, DJ E-Rock, Miles Medina, Shortkut, DJ Icy Ice and DJ Ace Ramos. Of course, further celebrating Pinoy global influence, you can check out streams from international artists like Russ, Sam Smith, Little Mix, Pretty Much, David Guetta, New Rules, Pink Sweats, and Niki/Rich Brian of 88 Rising.

In addition to the channel, they launched a kumu North America Facebook group powered by myx, a kumu news section on the myx.global website, co-presented events like the 2020 CSUF Friendship Games, & soon you’ll find original content co-created with the 2 teams distributed on the myxTV cable & satellite network in 20M homes, myxRADIO on the Dash Radio station with over 3.1M monthly listeners, & on the first Filipino-American Amazon Prime Video myx store.

“Through kumu, and the rest of our platforms, our mission is to not only highlight the best in Filipino talent worldwide, but also to introduce global artists to the highly engaged Filipino audience of over 120M worldwide. Filipinos are one of the highest performing groups in terms of Spotify and YouTube streaming. Through kumu, the more our quality artists are seen side by side with the best, the more recognition they will gain from mainstream and international audiences on our shows like myxCLUSIVES hosted by DannieBoi & Heavy Rotation by DJ Marlino,” Cobarrubias adds.

Filipino voices deserve to be heard, and now they’ve found another stage. “The possibilities are, indeed, endless, and there’s no better time than now to be unapologetically Filipino. The next generation of creators found a new home on kumu and myx, platforms that allow millions of fans globally of any ethnicity or nationality, to engage & enjoy great Uniquely Filipino content,” she concludes.
